Panel One: Training Sets and AI: Identifying and Setting Up the Right Package to Monetize

Data is being generated at an alarming speed and is critical to the success of many organizations. Data types include proprietary information from commercial and industrial processes, customer data, data generated from AI and other analytics, sensitive personal data, and public data. Successful tools, products, and business models frequently require data from multiple sources resulting in combined and derived data sets.

The panel will explore issues around the creation, ownership and monetization of complex mixed data sets. A panel of IP owners from diverse industries will discuss strategies employed to optimize business outcomes while protecting sensitive data and privacy.

Moderator: Charles Macedo, Partner, Amster, Rothstein & Ebenstein LLP

Panelists

  • Kevin Cranman, Attorney, Kevin Cranman, LLC

  • Laura Himelstein, Assistant General Counsel, EXL Service

Panel Sponsor: Amster, Rothstein & Ebenstein LLP

Panel Two: Owning What AI Creates

On August 1, 2019 the University of Surrey issued a press release claiming that it was pursuing US and European patent protection for the world’s first AI invention. Shortly thereafter on August 21, 2019, the USPTO promulgated a “Request for Comments on Patenting Artificial Intelligence Inventions”, and in October 2019 expanded the RFC to include examination of copyright, trade secret, and trademark protections for works and outputs generated by AI.  While some believe that AI technology is a long way off from creating inventions or works without intervention or involvement by humans, businesses and governing bodies are preparing now for the day when the creative genius in their midst is comprised of zeros and ones.

We will discuss the challenges facing the scope of patent, copyright, and trade secret protections, and techniques for using licensing terms to protect against gaps in IP protections.  Our panelists will discuss the state of the AI ecosystem across several industries, and trends to look out for as the AI economy continues to evolve.

Moderator: Chad Rutkowski, Partner, Baker Hostetler

  • Dean Alderucci, Director of Research, Center for AI and Patent Analysis, Carnegie Mellon University

  • Elizabeth Lester, Assistant General Counsel, Intellectual Property, Equifax

Panel Three: AI Commercialization

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning are not new concepts or uses in commercialization, and with the rise of smart machines and robotics, AI and ML are on the tips of everyone’s tongues these days. The industry applications of these are vast: pharmaceutical, finance, healthcare, automotive, retail, and many others are trying to deploy and scale these systems. This panel will review case studies of a few industry perspectives in how to license, commercialize, integrate, and deploy these technologies into company product offerings.

Moderator: Nila Bhakuni – Director, Technology Transfer, Dartmouth College

  • Amir Ghavi, Partner, Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson LLP

  • DJ Nag, Chief Investment Officer, Ventech
