As the world struggles with COVID-19, intellectual property (IP) is a significant topic. GIPA is pleased to provide information, and opportunity for discussion, regarding possible waivers of IP rights, compulsory licenses, and other approaches.
This event starts a broader conversation with focus on the legal fundamentals of relevant IP law (with focus on the US, the EU, India, and South Africa), as well as thoughts on how changes to the established IP legal framework might affect the research, development, and economic framework behind bringing health-improving/saving solutions to market – and the technical and practical realities and challenges of bringing complicated product (like vaccines) to market.
Micaela Modiano, a European patent attorney with Modiano & Partners, will address the topic from the perspectives of the patent laws of Europe and South Africa.
Lisa Mueller, a US patent attorney with Casimir Jones, will address the topic from the perspectives of the patent laws of the US and India.
Both Micaela and Lisa have extensive experience in IP, especially patent protection and strategic counseling for innovation and inventions in life sciences, pharmaceuticals, vaccine technologies, and others – for individual inventors, national and global companies, higher education and research enterprises, and others. As well, both have been tracking this IP Waiver / Compulsory License issue – and have both recently published/presented on it.
Yaakov Citrin, a GIPA Board Member and US patent attorney with Hartman & Citrin, will moderate the program.
